Artist statement.... Integrating raku and nature
As a Raku artist with a love of the natural environment, my work reflects a balance between the fire-intense colors of Raku and the gentle colors of nature.
Each ceramic sculpture is a study of the nature of raku and it's complex relationship between fire, clay, and glaze. My work incorporates unique raku-fired pieces, with personally polished agates/jaspers, shells, and driftwood found on the Oregon Coast.
Adding a polished stone to a piece is a signature of my work.
As an artist, Raku challenges my sense of order and predictable outcomes. It forces flexibility, spontaneity and the ability to accept changes in direction. As a person, it helps me live in the present and find creative solutions to life's challenges.
